DESCRIPTION:Wondering what a roller coaster\, raccoon\, vacuum cleaner\, and elephant have to do with effectively teaching/presenting online?  Keep reading.  \n  \nLectures that drone on and on.  Overwhelming unread notifications of online events.  Workshops that are drier than the Sahara desert and more boring than watching paint dry. We’ve all been there.  \n  \nOnline meetings\, courses\, workshops\, check-ins are never-ending. Some research shows we are spending up to 16 hours a day on digital media!  Globally\, we doubled our online content consumption in 2020.   \n  \nWe are bored\, exhausted and we’re struggling. Mental health challenges are up in most countries and yet mental health service provision is down.  \n  \nThere is hope\, however. \n  \nNotwithstanding the tremendous costs of the global pandemic\, there are hidden benefits to Covid and all that time online.  Help is in sight. DESCRIPTION:Wondering what a roller coaster\, raccoon\, vacuum cleaner\, and elephant have to do with effectively teaching/presenting online?  Keep reading. \n  \nLectures that drone on and on.  Overwhelming unread notifications of online events.  Workshops that are drier than the Sahara desert and more boring than watching paint dry. We’ve all been there.  \n  \nOnline meetings\, courses\, workshops\, check-ins are never-ending. Some research shows we are spending up to 16 hours a day on digital media!  Globally\, we doubled our online content consumption in 2020. \n  \nWe are bored\, exhausted and we’re struggling. Mental health challenges are up in most countries and yet mental health service provision is down. \n  \nThere is hope\, however. \n  \nNotwithstanding the tremendous costs of the global pandemic\, there are hidden benefits to Covid and all that time online.  Help is in sight. SUMMARY:Learning and Development Roundtable: The surprising skill you didn’t know you needed when giving feedback
DESCRIPTION:What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘feedback?’  \nWhether we’re on the giving or receiving end of feedback\, most of us get a pit of dread in our stomachs\, with a million butterflies threatening to fly up our throats and suffocate us.  \nOr maybe you’re saying to yourself that you don’t give feedback very often. I beg to differ.   \nIf you’re human\, if you’re part of a team\, you give feedback.   If you’re a colleague\, partner\, parent\, and/or friend\, you guessed it; you give feedback. \nFeedback includes sharing your opinions\, thoughts\, comments\, constructive (or not!) criticism\, and/or input. \nKnowing we’re about to receive feedback: \n\nActivates our flight\, flee or freeze response\nTends to trip our anxiety\nIgnites top-of-the-mind reactions instead of thoughtful responses\n\nAnd when it’s our turn to give feedback\, research shows\, we have a nasty habit of believing that we’re good at giving feedback and that our feedback makes a difference (insert self-congratulatory pat on the back here). \nI’m about to pop that bubble. \nDouglas Stone and Sheila Heen\, in their excellent book “Thanks for the Feedback” say we have it all wrong.  We’re so used to focusing on giving feedback that we don’t understand the real key is learning how to receive feedback. \nIn my thirty-plus year career in Learning and Development I put their book among my top five learnings in my life. We’ve all been there.  \n  \nOnline meetings\, courses\, workshops\, check-ins are never-ending. Some research shows we are spending up to 16 hours a day on digital media!  Globally\, we doubled our online content consumption in 2020. \n  \nWe are bored\, exhausted and we’re struggling. Mental health challenges are up in most countries and yet mental health service provision is down. \n  \nThere is hope\, however. \n  \nNotwithstanding the tremendous costs of the global pandemic\, there are hidden benefits to Covid and all that time online.  Help is in sight. DESCRIPTION:Is your motivation lagging and sagging?  Do you feel perpetually behind\, juggling a million plates in the air?  So much so that you feel defeated before you even start? \nDoes the idea of building good habits sound appealing\, in part to address your motivation\, but you haven’t a hot clue where to start?  Do you know you could be more of who you want to be and do more of what you want to do if only you could master some healthy habits? \nMotivation is the willingness to get the job done by starting rather than procrastinating\, persisting in the face of distractions\, and investing enough mental effort to succeed.  \nIt accounts for 40% of the success of team projects\, says Richard E. Clark and Bror Saxberg in their HBR article 4 Reasons Good Employees Lose Their Motivation.  \nHabits are the small decisions you make and actions you perform every day. According to researchers at Duke University\, habits account for about 40 percent of our behaviors on any given day. DESCRIPTION:Wondering what a roller coaster\, raccoon\, vacuum cleaner\, and elephant have to do with effectively teaching/presenting online?  Keep reading. \n  \nLectures that drone on and on.  Overwhelming unread notifications of online events.  Workshops that are drier than the Sahara desert and more boring than watching paint dry. We’ve all been there.  \n  \nOnline meetings\, courses\, workshops\, check-ins are never-ending.
