How are unicorns fake, but a giraffe is real? What’s more believable, a horse with a horn or a leopard moose camel with a forty-foot neck? So says the popular and thought-provoking meme.
This really got me thinking.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been sick for two weeks at the time of writing this or maybe it’s because the weight of the world feels particularly heavy these days (living in Kenya and witnessing the dire effects of gutting USAID and UN funding), it got me in a particularly museful mood.
Musing about hope.

Is it simply time for hope? For belief in what on paper looks like a fantasy (said leopard moose camel with a forty-foot neck).
Here’s what I’m hoping for.
A kind world.
That easily includes, instead of casually and cruelly excludes.

A peaceful world.
Where dissenting ideas are thought-provoking and welcomed instead of seen as dire and dangerous.
An equitable world.
Where skin colour, who one chooses to love, and where one is born don’t predict a life of privilege or pain.
A world that provides essentials, including human rights.
Where health care, food, and education are available to all.
A democratic world.
Where the rule of law is practiced fairly. Where governance systems work.
A world of truth, honour, and integrity
Where powerful public figures don’t spin so many lies, the webs are so thick they obscure the sun.
A world that doesn’t divide into dichotomies but celebrates continuums.
Where divisions and dichotomies like right/wrong, and black/white, are more nuanced and stretched to the length of continuums.

A beautiful world.
Where art coexists with science. Where beauty is celebrated and pain is managed.
A healthy world.
Where ecosystems thrive with clean air and water.
A complex world.
Where, in all her mystical and mysterious beauty, the intricate puzzle pieces of people, planet, and critters somehow fit and thrive.
When I’m weary, like now, and not feeling well, I call on hope for such a world. Because if a leopard moose camel with a forty-foot neck can exist, why can’t hope survive and thrive.
