I’ve travelled to some 50 countries. Getting across the street as a pedestrian can be harder in some places than others.
I was recently in Newcastle upon Tyne (cool name, eh!) in the U.K. for a conference.
I’ve been to the U.K. many times before, but somehow I didn’t remember how to cross the street.
Every day, I’d walk from my hotel to the conference venue and stop in my tracks when it came time to cross the street.
Why?
(BTW, not because of the cars driving left-hand on the street.)

Before I tell you, answer me this. Where do you look when you’re on foot and crossing the street?
Do you look ahead to the pedestrian crossing signal, which tells you when it’s safe to cross?
Do you look for traffic and barge your way across because there are no pedestrian crossing lights?
This time it was neither.

It took me a minute before I realized I had to look to the side.
Yes, the pedestrian crossing lights were to my left or right, not straight ahead. I didn’t get a picture while I was there, so this Google Map image is the closest example. Note where the pedestrian crossing light is that I’ve circled – beside you, not ahead of you.
I got used to it eventually, but it got me thinking.
